O.C. means on center. This construction term indicates that the measurement from the center of one construction component to the center of the next component should be the number of inches or centimeters (or millimeters) specified. It would be the same as saying that one should measure from the left edge of one component to the left edge of the next component. This measurement produces consistent spacing from one stud to the next stud (or floor joist, rafter, truss, or other component). This consistent spacing allows the builder to figure out exactly where the studs are when you cover them with plywood or oriented strand board or some other material. The consistent spacing allows the roofer to tell exactly where the roof trusses are located under the roof sheathing when the trusses are covered up and can no longer be seen. This allows the builder to drive nails or screws through the sheet materials into the studs, joists, rafters, etc., without actually beign able to see them since they are no longer visible.
